CHAPTER NINETEEN

I sat in my chair and thought about my conversation with Lindsey Raynor. She had appeared surprised about Brandon’s death, and she’d dropped hints that Brandon might’ve been considering leaving Emily. But Lindsey had also indicated she was in love with him. She’d said she hadn’t had a sexual affair with Brandon, but what if Lindsey was lying? If she was, and Emily knew about the affair, she could have been terrified that Brandon might leave her. That gave Emily a motive to kill her husband.

Another thought crossed my mind. What if Lindsey wanted Brandon to leave Emily, and when he didn’t, Lindsey killed him? The scorned lover. It seemed less likely, but it was a possibility. Lindsey needed more scrutiny. I was still mulling things when my cell phone rang. I didn’t recognize the number, and I picked up with a clipped tone.

“Spillman.”

“Detective Spillman?” I couldn’t place the voice. “This is Gerald Paulson. Emily’s brother.”

“Oh, yes.” Now I connected the face with the voice, and I wondered why he was calling. “What can I do for you?”

“Um …”

Super hesitant. What was going on?

“Mr. Paulson? Is everything all right?” I asked.

Another few beats of silence, then, “Would you be able to meet me at my office? It’s important. I work at Altima Health. It’s off Sixth Avenue, on the east side of the street. I’m on the third floor.” He rattled off the address. “It’s important,” he repeated.

I glanced at my watch. A little before one o’clock. “I could be there in about half an hour.”

“Perfect. I’ll let the office manager know to expect you.”

The call ended, and I quickly called Spats, but it went to voice mail. I asked him to call me, and give me an update on the warrant for the CSBA records. Then I called Ernie.

“What are you doing now?”

“I’m digging into Emily Long,” he said. “Why?”

“I just got a funny phone call from Gerald Paulson, Emily’s brother.” I quickly told him about Gerald’s asking to see me. “You haven’t talked to him?”

“No. I would’ve called you first. What do you think he wants?”

“I don’t know. But it’d make me more comfortable if someone’s with me. Could you meet me there?”

“Yeah, I should be able to pull away.” I gave him the address, and he said, “See you soon.”

Exactly twenty-nine minutes later, I was pulling into a large parking lot in front of a four-story concrete building. Ernie was pacing in front of the entrance, and he looked at me with a curious expression as I walked up. He glanced toward the building.

“You think Paulson found out something, or was he holding something back when we first talked to him?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” I said as I marched toward the revolving doors. “But let’s find out.”

We walked inside, crossed the lobby, and the elevators deposited us on the third floor. A sign directed us to Altima Health, to the left. When we walked in, the office manager, a young man in a white shirt and red tie looked up.
